Warner Bros. has finally unveiled the release date for the highly-anticipated “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel, titled “Furiosa.”

The production giant announced that the prequel will catapult into theaters on June 23, 2023, Variety first reported. The film, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role, will tell the story of Imperator Furiosa that was originally played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 movie.

“The Queen’s Gambit” star will be joined by Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the movie, which takes place before “Mad Max: Fury Road.” George Miller will be donning the director’s hat for the project once again while his long-time friend and producer Doug Mitchell will produce the project.

The “Mad Max” series is undoubtedly one of the most-acclaimed film franchises in the history of Hollywood. The first movie in the series hit the theaters in 1979 and starred Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky. It turned out to be a huge success for Miller and Warner Bros. as the movie received universal acclaim from the critics and earned $100 million at the box office.

The next two films, “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” and “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,” were also successful in earning positive reviews and money at the box office.

Miller came back to direct the fourth installment almost 30 years after the last film was released in theaters. “Mad Max: Fury Road” starring Tom Hardy as Max became the first movie in the franchise’s history to be nominated at the Academy Awards.

The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, and it emerged victorious in six categories such as film editing, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound mixing, sound editing and production design.

The movie currently holds a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Apart from “Furiosa,” the production company also revealed the release dates for two more upcoming movies -- “Coyote vs. Acme” and “The Color Purple.”

“Coyote vs. Acme” is based on Ian Frazier’s collection of humorous essays in which the famous cartoon character Will E. Coyote has filed a product liability case against Acme, a company that supplies unpredictable rocket sleds and other faulty machinery. The screenplay for the upcoming film is being co-written by James Gunn, who will also produce the movie under his own banner.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2021.

On the other hand, the musical titled “The Color Purple,” which will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey is going to make its way to the theaters on Dec. 20, 2021.
