“The Gifted” Season 1 just cast Garret Dillahunt in a recurring role.

According to Deadline, “The Mindy Project” actor will play the role of Dr. Roderick Campbell, an intimidating mutant researcher who was hired by the Sentinel Services. The character is also described as “professorial and intense,” and he has a mission that will soon be revealed in the new Fox TV series.

“The Gifted” centers on the lives of a suburban couple and their children. Matriarch Kate Strucker (Amy Acker) and her husband, Reed (Stephen Moyer), will soon find out that their children possess mutant powers. Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Andy (Percy Hynes White) both have very different superpowers.

Kate and Reed will be forced to go on the run to help protect their kids from a hostile government and will join an underground group of mutants that will help them out. Unfortunately, their fight to survive will prove to be a struggle since they will also face enemies along the way, including Dr. Campbell.

The other mutants in “The Gifted” Season 1 include Lorna (Emma Dumont), Proudstar (Blair Redford), Eclipse (Sean Teale), Blink (Jamie Chung) and Dreamer (Elena Satine).

Meanwhile, Dillahunt’s other TV credits include a series regular role in Hulu’s “The Mindy Project.” The series is set to return for its sixth and final season starting Sept. 12. In “The Mindy Project,” Dillahunt plays the role of Jody Kimball-Kinney, Mindy Lahiri’s (Mindy Kaling) colleague.

In the upcoming episodes, the usually opinionated doctor will struggle to deal with a fellow physician named Dr. Mary Hernandez (Ana Ortiz). Dr. Hernandez’s practice, which is very similar to Jody’s and Mindy’s, will takeoff in an instant. Jody, worried that their practice will fail, will try to confront Dr. Hernandez. There are speculations that the confrontation will lead to a potential romantic storyline for the two characters.

Gillahunt also starred in “Burn Notice” as Simon Escher and in “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” as Cromartie, according to TV Line. The actor’s film credits included “12 Years a Slave,” “Winter’s Bone,” “Looper” and more.

“The Gifted” Season 1 will premiere on Fox on Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. EDT.
