Ted Danson as Michael

Michael (Ted Danson) has a new idea on how he can torment Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jianyu (Manny Jacinto) more effectively in Season 2 of NBC’s “The Good Place.” But Michael will be having some difficulties executing his plan, because not all of his superiors are supportive of it.

In a recent interview with TV Guide, series creator Michael Schur revealed that Michael will be dealing with “a boss who thinks his plan is stupid.” And even though Michael has a crew of demons tasked to help him carry out his plan, these minions have their personal demands that only complicate things for him. Schur said that Season 2 of the NBC series will sort of see Michael as an indie film director working with a novice crew and a studio head who hates the script.

While Michael’s objective remains the same in Season 2 — that is to torture Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani and Jianyu — Schur said that the next season is going to be different from the show’s freshman run.

“Well, [Michael is] going for a different thing now,” Schur told Entertainment Weekly last March. “He says … that the problem was that they all spent too much time together too quickly, so he’s going to spread them out, give them each a different soulmate, torture them individually for a while, and then slowly bring them together.”

“Because he’s splitting them up, he has to make certain changes to certain things, because now he’s trying to make them all miserable individually, which means he has to turn up the flame a little bit on how sad they are alone,” Schur continued. “The changes, I would say, are intensifiers. They’re little adjustments and things that he has done to make the baseline level of misery individually a little bit higher than it was before.”

Schur, however, revealed to Entertainment Weekly last June that Michael’s new plan of keeping Eleanor and Chidi away from each other as long as possible will be ruined by Eleanor’s note to herself at the end of the Season 1 finale. “She has found Chidi because of the note and has some questions,” said Schur. “[But Michael] is trying to do his … thing and try to spin his way out of those questions.”
