Grammy award-winning recording engineer Mark Capps was fatally shot by a Nashville police Thursday after holding his wife and stepdaughter said he held them hostage at gunpoint.

The Metro Nashville Police Department's Don Aaron said in a news briefing that a responding SWAT team shot Capps, 54, when he opened the front door holding a gun.

His wife and stepdaughter said he awakened them at about 3 a.m. Thursday and threatened to shoot them before they escaped after he fell asleep. The wife and stepdaughter reported the incident at a nearby police station, which dispatched the SWAT team.

Capp's website says he has collaborated with The Chicks, Neil Diamond, Olivia Newton-John, Amy Grant, Barry Manilow and other artists. He was awarded a Grammy for best polka album in 2006 through 2009 for his collaboration with Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra.

In body cam video, an officer can be seen asking Capps to show his hands. The officer then opens fire and shatters the glass storm door with three shots. He repeatedly shouts for Capps to show his hands.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said it's investigating.

"TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews," TBI said in a news release around 9 p.m. Thursday.
