Ben isn’t the only surgeon shaking things up at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. According to Jerrika Hinton, who portrays Stephanie on the hit ABC series, her character will cause some chaos in an upcoming Season 12 installment when her beau is wheeled into surgery.

In episode 21, titled “You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side,” Stephanie’s boyfriend Kyle (Wilmer Walderrama) goes under the knife when a new tumor makes its nasty debut. And the smitten resident will be forced to watch from the sidelines due to protocol.

“That’s the worst thing you can do,” Hinton told TVLine, describing just how “excruciating” it is for her character to not be involved with the operation. “Like I said, she’s good at her job and she’s trying to keep the professional and the personal separate … So even thought she has a personal relationship with [Kyle], she’s really doing her best to make sure that everything she advocates for is 100 percent about the medicine.”

But the actress dished to Entertainment Weekly that Stephanie may have trouble trying to separate the two, which will ultimately put her in a sticky situation. “She’s backed into a corner and forced to make a choice,” Hinton revealed. And it looks like the decision Stephanie makes will put her in some serious hot water with her boss.

The “Grey’s” star said that her “stubborn/hardheaded” nature prompts her to fight for what she thinks it right for Kyle. “And that ends up getting her in a ton of trouble with her superiors,” she adds.

Looks like Bailey (Chandra Wilson) will have her hands full of reckless residents as Season 12 of the medical drama winds down.

“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
