Before the Season 2 finale of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” airs tonight, fans are likely wondering if they’ll be saying goodbye to the show forever after the new episode ends or if the show will be coming back for more in the future.

An official decision on whether to renew “Big Little Lies” for Season 3 or to cancel it after two seasons has not yet been made, but HBO president Casey Bloys doesn’t think there’s a high chance of the star-studded drama returning.

“I love this group of people – I would do anything with them,” Bloys told TVLine earlier this year. “But the reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. We have deals with some of them — Nicole [Kidman] is doing her next show with us. I just think it’s not realistic.”

Aside from Kidman, the “Big Little Lies” cast also includes Reese Witherspoon, who’s working on other shows like “Little Fires Everywhere” and “The Morning Show,” Shailene Woodley, who has serial killer thriller “Misanthrope” in the works, Zoë Kravitz, who’s set to star in the new Hulu series “High Fidelity” and Laura Dern, whose new movie “Little Women” is due out later this year.

That said, if the busy stars can find a way to clear up their calendars, Bloys isn’t against the idea of doing a third season.

“Look, if they all came to me and said, ‘We worked out all of our schedules!’ – then sure,” Bloys said. “But I just don’t think it’s realistic.”

Whether or not the show gets renewed or canceled, fans will still get closure to a lot of the storylines currently going on when the Season 2 finale airs, as Bloys said this season “was a chance for everyone involved to end [the franchise] in a way that feels satisfying.”

Find out just how satisfying the end really is when the Season 2 finale of “Big Little Lies” airs on HBO on Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.
