KEY POINTS

  • Kaylee Goncalves' father said his daughter's true crime binge led her to help find a missing person
  • Goncalves reported a possible missing person to Idaho police almost a year before her gruesome death
  • The police officer who contacted Goncalves about the missing person is now a lead investigator for the Idaho murders

Kaylee Goncalves, one of the four Idaho university students killed by suspect Bryan Kohberger, had closely followed true crime stories online almost a year before the gruesome murders.

Steven Goncalves, the victim's father, said he reached out to Tiktok true crime personality Olivia Vitale because his daughter followed her content closely.

"I started looking at the case that she was following with you, and then I said, I'm going to reach out because maybe she can help resolve Kaylee's story," Goncalves told Vitale in an interview, Fox News reported.

Goncalves' father also reacted to his daughter's role in reporting a possible missing person sighting to Idaho police.

"They were already working together for other people stories, but maybe this can help resolve her own story, which is just terrible that this happened to her... But that was the daughter I had. She wanted to help other families find this justice."

In October 2021, Kaylee called the Moscow police, telling them that she saw a woman resembling Sharon Archer, who had been reported missing since September.

According to the incident report, Goncalves said she recognized the woman's face after seeing a missing person flyer. She sent the flyer to Sgt. Dustin Blaker and the police went to the Walmart store to look for Archer or her Toyota SUV.

Blaker, who would eventually become a lead investigator on the Idaho killings, wrote in his report on Oct. 6, 2021, that Goncalves told him that the woman was staring at her and her boyfriend when they were inside Walmart.

But Blaker said they did not find anything about Archer after Goncalves reported it.

Archer was found dead inside her submerged vehicle in Fernan Lake about three weeks later, according to local media.

The newly-emerged details about one of Kohberger's victims came after the suspect reportedly followed three of his victims on Instagram before he killed them.

A now-deleted Instagram account that was allegedly owned by Kohberger followed Goncalves, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle.

People Magazine said none of the victims followed Kohberger's alleged account.

Kohberger allegedly messaged at least one of his victims numerous times on Instagram but never received a reply.

Kohberger, a 28-year-old criminal justice graduate student at Washington State University, is currently detained at the Latah County Jail in Moscow, Idaho.

He was accused of killing four University of Idaho students in an off-campus apartment home on Nov. 13, 2022.

Kohberger was extradited to Idaho from his home state of Pennsylvania, where he waived his right for a speedy preliminary hearing to give his defense more time to review the evidence.

Kohberger's next court appearance will be on June 26.
