A 12-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old was injured in a shooting that took place at a Florida residence.

The two victims were with other juveniles and were left unsupervised when the incident took place Sunday afternoon, officials said. Officers from the Tampa Police Department responded to the scene just before 2 p.m. and found the 12-year-old boy dead inside the house. The 14-year-old boy was also found with a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital, Tampa Bay Times.

The younger victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and did not survive. The 14-year-old boy was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said the two boys did not live at the Tampa residence where the shooting incident took place. "Other juveniles" were also present at the time, police said, adding that the shooting is being investigated and is currently in a "very preliminary" stage.

The circumstances around the shooting were not immediately released. No details about a possible suspect or suspects were released.

Officials also said the shooting "does not appear to be random."

Investigators spoke to witnesses present at the scene when the two boys were shot. They also questioned an adult guardian living at the same address, but the person was not present at the time of the shooting.

Diana LaGrone spoke to ABC Action News and said she lived for nearly four decades in the same neighborhood where the 12-year-old boy was shot dead.

"As a mother, it breaks your heart. Because it's not just the kids involved here. It's the families of those kids," she told the outlet.

"These guns should not be in children's hands. Adults should be held accountable if they're getting them from an adult," LaGrone added.

In a similar incident, a 17-year-old was fatally shot by a 15-year-old boy who was "recklessly" waving and showing off a firearm to his friends at a Florida home in November last year. First responders found the victim, identified as Mekhi Stevenson, with a gunshot wound to his chest in the northwest Miami-Dade house. The suspect, Darrell Hobley, was later found at his home and arrested for the teenage victim's death.
