Full stack engineers are some of the most valuable members of any team. They are uniquely positioned and highly sought out, as they hold expertise across the entire technical ecosystem of a company, product or service. Thanks to their knowledge of both back-end and front-end systems, as well as the databases that operate behind them all, full stack engineers are versatile, efficient and extremely innovative in problem solving.

He may be young, at only 25 years old, but this is actually an asset, as it means that he is open-minded, enthusiastic and highly motivated to keep up with the rapid advancements in modern technology. He earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from the Paris Graduate School of Digital Innovation, formerly the EPITECH European Institute of Information Technology – an institution renowned for its expertise and innovation. He then went on to complete his master's in computer science at California State University in Long Beach.

During his time in college, Octeau was a top finalist in the RedBull Mind Gamers competition, a global competition based on complex escape room games that require excellent analytical skills to solve. He joined the qualifier round with a team of four people, where they finished first in the Bordeaux qualifiers and earned the best overall national result. They then went on to receive the third place award at the World Championship in Budapest – an impressive achievement amongst the 25 participating countries. It was an incredible opportunity for Octeau to put his problem solving skills to the test, and he had a blast doing it.

Although he had worked on some short-term projects previously, Octeau's first significant freelance work was with Nyl2 Pronos. This SaaS-based mobile application provides analysis and predicts probable outcomes to facilitate online betting for soccer games. Octeau helped to create a responsive website and an API that included online subscriptions. He also contributed to the development of an Angular-based dashboard, allowing the platform's administrator to change the content dynamically, and to easily manage the growing number of users.

After pursuing other freelance work with up-and-coming startup companies, in 2020 he eventually went on to take a full-time position as a full stack engineer with CitizenNet – a Condé Nast Company. CitizenNet is a Facebook-preferred marketing platform that specializes in workflows for sales and social media buying advertisers, interpreting real-time social signals from the biggest social media platforms around (YouTube, Twitter, Yahoo, Snapchat, etc). The platform supports leading brands and agencies across a wide range of industries, from eCommerce to education and beyond.

At CitizenNet, Octeau worked on various facets of the technological landscape. He helped to integrate the social media platform's marketing APIs into a unified social campaign management tool. He developed a web application for the company, using a combination of AngularJS, Python and Flask. He also worked on the deployment of different clusters using Kubernetes, Helm, and Docker images. His familiarity, knowledge and expertise across such different programming languages was a huge contributor to his success in this role.

Where he's going

In November 2021, Jeremy Octeau was elated to join BlueCargo as a lead full stack engineer and manager, overseeing a team of four engineers. It is a position that has presented him with more seniority, while pushing his career to new heights.

BlueCargo is a one-of-a-kind software company that helps carriers move equipment in and out of port terminals more efficiently, in order to mitigate unfair late fees. Their mission is to help move goods from port to first-mile destination faster, more reliably, and more cost-effectively – empty container returns made simple. The platform currently delivers real-time data for both Long Beach and Los Angeles terminals, empowering dispatch teams to schedule and process empty returns with support and ease. Recently, the Federal Maritime Commission has requested BlueCargo to perform repeated audits on supply chain data for presentation in front of a commission in regards to a massive lawsuit against a German carrier Hapag Lloyd. It is clear that the company has tapped into a much-needed niche.

Octeau's contributions to BlueCargo have been critical to the company's growing success. His team has been responsible for the development of the front-end react app, the back-end services and the scrapers. It is his team that maintains and implements the platform's new features. They are also responsible for maintaining and updating the complex AWS infrastructure. Given the company's big name subscribers, such as XPO Logistics and Pacifica Trucks LLC, the pressure is on for Octeau to deliver and, so far, he is proving to be more than up to the task.

In order to continue their growth, BlueCargo will be attending several major supply chain events this year, such as the annual Transpacific Maritime Conference. In regards to what sets them apart from the competition, Octeau shares: "Currently, our key differentiation lies in our extensive network of truckers, which provides us with unique data insights that our competitors lack. Additionally, we offer unparalleled per diem and demurrage tools that are unrivaled in the market."

With Jeremy Octeau's innovation and leadership, there is no doubt that BlueCargo is on the road to even greater success. He builds strong and reliable software architecture, while prioritizing development that delivers clear and tangible value to the business. Rising through the ranks of the industry so quickly and managing an entire team at only 25 years old make Octeau truly extraordinary in comparison with his peers. He's moving full steam ahead, so let's see what comes next.
