KEY POINTS

  • Ivanka Trump provoked an uproar by tweeting out an image implying that Donald Trump should be added to Mount Rushmore
  • Trump has pushed to have his face added to the monument in the past
  • The odds of it actually happening are very low

Ivanka Trump sparked ridicule after tweeting a photo of Donald Trump in front of Mount Rushmore, suggesting that he should be added to the monument. Twitter users scoffed at the suggestion that Trump should join the ranks of U.S. presidential legends, noting mounting COVID-19 fatalities and his failure to ever win the popular vote.

The photo comes from an Independence Day 2020 visit that former park officials said risked fires, defacement, and death due to fireworks and large crowds during the ongoing pandemic. The perspective of the photo reignited old campaigns to have Trump added to the monument.

Trump’s critics derided the photo, reminding Ivanka of the various undignified images Trump has generated with dictators and criminals.

Others recalled a more recent photo that barnstormed Twitter when Trump posed alone with a tiny desk typically reserved for large group photos.

One widely reposted image photoshopped Trump’s face onto the monument but replaced the other faces with those of prominent men accused of sexual assault, a reference to the numerous accusations against Trump.

As it stands, Donald Trump will just have to satisfy himself with his own dreams of his face appearing on Mount Rushmore. Even with staunch ally Kristi Noem leading South Dakota, it’s very unlikely that Trump could garner such a large public works project on a federally controlled monument.
