Petra Solano (Yael Grobglas) of “Jane the Virgin” went from villain to ally in the first three seasons of the show, and it’s all thanks to Grobglas’ endearing nature and comedic timing.

At first, Petra was Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) rival. She manipulated her way into Rafael’s (Justin Baldoni) life, then cheated on him with his friend. When she was caught, she decided to inseminate herself with the last of his sperm in order to force Rafael to keep her in his life.

That scene was particularly hilarious, with Petra using a turkey baster in order to get herself pregnant. “I was surprised at how much I liked that [physical comedy] for Petra,” Grobglas told Bustle. “For me, that’s really where it started.”

Due to that scene, Grobglas admitted that fans began sending her weird gifts. “Do you know how many turkey basters I’ve gotten as gifts since that scene?” she said while laughing.

Petra really changed this third season as she embraced motherhood with gusto, even topping Jane’s own nurturing skills. “I love how our show handles motherhood,” said Grobglas. “Petra’s whole pregnancy experience and birth and dealing with having children was so different from Jane’s, with her postpartum depression and her really hard birth, which was so opposite of what she wanted. She’s not this naturally maternal person, and she doesn’t have the strong female support group that Jane does. She doesn’t have any kind of support group, actually, and she’s had to figure it out on her own.”

That, according to Grobglas, is what made fans respect her character and made her more relatable.

When Season 4 opens, Petra is in for some trouble now that her twin sister, Anezka, is holding her at gunpoint. Deadline earlier asked show creator Jennie Snyder Urman if Petra is going to be safe, and her answer left fans worried. “Her life is definitely in danger! I can’t say whether or not she’ll pull the trigger, but I will say there will be a surprising sequence of events,” she said.

As for Petra’s ex-husband Rafael, he is also going to face some trouble of his own after his sister, Luisa (Yara Martinez), took all of his money. “Luisa’s going to freeze his cards, he’s going to spend a little bit of time at the Villanueva house, taking 45-minute showers - they have one bathroom and he just doesn’t get it. He’s never lived [without] money, so that opens up a whole avenue of storytelling for us,” Urman told Entertainment Tonight.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 will return on Oct. 13. at 9 p.m. EST.
