Janet Jackson will not join Justin Timberlake when he headlines the Super Bowl halftime next year.

Timberlake just confirmed that he will headline the 2018 Super Bowl. There are rumors that he will use this as an opportunity to reunite with the "Rhythm Nation" singer. However, multiple sources have confirmed that Jackson will likely have to turn down Timberlake after their controversial performance in the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

One insider told E! News that Jackson has no plans of performing at the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, another source said that the show will conflict with the "Escapade" singer's tour schedule. However, the "What Have You Done For Me Lately" songstress is reportedly happy for the former NSYNC member.

"She is happy to hear JT is performing and thinks he will be great as always!" one source said. "She wishes him a great performance. They had some great memories."

In 2004, Janet Jackson headlined the Super Bowl halftime show. She and the "Cry Me A River" singer were on stage performing his hit "Rock Your Body." At the end of the show, Timberlake sang the last line "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song" and ripped Jackson's ensemble revealing her pierced nipple to about 90 million viewers who watched live on TV.

"Nipplegate" was born and following the incident, Jackson faced the brunt of the criticism that included a $550,000 fine levied against CBS by the Federal Communication Commission, CNN reported. The publication noted that Jackson issued a statement saying that it was a "costume reveal" gone awry and issued an apology. Timberlake was also sorry for the controversy and said that it was "not intentional and is regrettable."

However, for many, Timberlake, had not issued an apology to Jackson yet. "Unless Justin Timberlake starts his set by introducing Janet Jackson with an apology and then continues watching quietly while she does 12 minutes of her catalog solo, the Super Bowl can keep this halftime show," Crystal Methanny wrote on Twitter.

As for Timberlake's halftime set, it is expected to be a "classic JT." "Justin will be playing his old stuff during his Super Bowl performance. He plans to perform the 'classic JT stuff,'" a source told E! News. "Justin's team has really been pushing to lock in this deal and he's very excited for the opportunity."
