  • He said they are now "creating moments" and "building memories" as a couple and as a family

Justin Bieber got candid about his marriage with Hailey Baldwin as he revisited their first year as husband and wife.

Bieber covers the May issue of GQ, where he opened up about the ups and downs of their marriage. The singer and the model tied the knot in September 2018 when he was 24 and she was 21.

Bieber admitted that getting married and starting his own family were always part of the plan. However, even if he felt that it was his "calling" and knew he made the right decision, their first year of marriage had not been easy due to his own personal demons.

"The first year of marriage was really tough because there was a lot going back to the trauma. There was just a lack of trust," he told the magazine. "There was all these things that you don't want to admit to the person that you're with, because it's scary. You don't want to scare them off by saying, 'I'm scared.'"

He recalled walking on eggshells throughout his first year as Baldwin's husband. But he believes they have overcome the hurdle and are still very happy together.

"We’re just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories," he added. "And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to. Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that."

Meanwhile, Baldwin had nothing but praise for her husband when she recently spoke about her struggles as a public figure on her YouTube channel. She admitted that she was so upset when a TikTok user called her out for allegedly being rude and she couldn't help but compare it to what Bieber went through.

"I had it on a much smaller level, but even my husband had to just go through everything in front of everybody and make lots of mistakes in front of the entire world," she said of her husband.

Baldwin added that she was so impressed with the way the "Sorry" crooner handled all the attacks against him because she couldn't imagine how these would affect her mentally, emotionally and physically. "And I'm just grateful that he's able to be the mature, stable adult that he is now," she added.
