She got to inherit a title as the future role as a Queen Consort when she married Prince William in 2011, but Kate Middleton reportedly doesn’t see herself as “lucky” because of how her life turned out due to her relationship.

According to the Mirror, back in the couple’s days at St. Andrews University, one of their friends told a young Middleton that she was “lucky” because she was dating a Prince. However, the future Duchess of Cambridge reportedly had a cheeky response instead claiming that she wasn’t the lucky one at all.

“He’s lucky to have me,” she allegedly replied.

Sure enough, Prince William reportedly did see that himself, and decided to make things official by proposing to his longtime love in 2010. However, in the book “The Making of a Royal Romance,” Katie Nicholl wrote that the decision didn’t come lightly, and the couple only got engaged because William, who had split from Middleton earlier on, had finally decided he was ready to get married.

“He was aware his father had been pressured into marrying Diana because she was deemed the suitable bride,” she wrote. “He was reluctant to bow to similar pressure and vowed not to be hurried at the altar. He made his feelings clear, telling a journalist in an off-guard moment that he had no plans of getting married any time soon.”

The couple’s past is being revisited as their relationship faces new alleged turmoil however, following reports that Middleton ended her friendship with Rose Hanbury after William allegedly had an affair with her.

Since that news broke, other reports have indicated that the couple’s marriage has been shaken to its core. Though the report has since been deemed as false, the damage and stress of the story has been hard on the couple.

“William and Kate are really upset about the cruel lies surrounding their marriage,” an alleged source told New Idea. “All the whispers about their relationship being on the rocks and spending time apart and living separate lives has really taken a toll on them—Kate especially—and they just want the rumors to stop.”
