Kim Kardashian fell victim to what some called “mommy-shaming” earlier this year after sharing an image of her 1-year-old Saint West in a car seat on Facebook. The image, which showed his car seat facing front, quickly came under fire from commenters who said the car seat should have been rear-facing, as is required by law for the safety of children younger than 2 years old. But not so, the 36-year-old “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star said in a video published Thursday.

In a clip titled “Facts,” Kardashian addressed the shaming alongside her assistant Stephanie Shepherd for her 886,000 subscribers on YouTube. The reason the photo showed her son facing forward at such a young age, she explained, was because he met both the weight and height requirements that called for a forward-facing car seat.

“So I took a photo of Saint and was sitting forward,” she said. “And they say for his age, he should be rear-facing. What people didn’t know is that Saint is now the weight and the height requirement to sit forward-facing. Saint actually weighs more than North. If that is believable, he does, and it is wild.”

Shepherd, laughing, added, “He’s a big boy.”

Critics had previously flooded the comments section of the June 24 photograph.

“[H]e is so cute let's protect this handsome boy by making sure is rear facing,” Margaret Diaz wrote in one of the most liked comments on the thread.

“Needs to be rear facing,” Karra Anne wrote. “Ossification of vertebrae doesn't happen until between 4-6 years. A one year old can be internally decapitated, which is almost always fatal, by just a quarter-inch stretch in their neck from an accident. Please rear face your children until they max out the seat, usually either 40 or 50 lbs.”

“Look, I'm not trying to judge or anything,” said Jessica Matias. “All mom's aren't perfect and we all make mistakes. But clearly he isn't facing the right way. From mommy to mommy please rearface him until two. With all the paparazzi following you all the time you're at a bigger risk getting into an accident. Don't risk INTERNAL DECAPATIAION [ sic ] or any other injuries if they could be prevented!”

California law states that children younger than 2 years old cannot ride rear-facing car seat — with the exception being that the child either weighs 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. It added that children in cars seats must be “secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat.”
