  • Fashion experts criticized Kim Kardashian for wearing Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress
  • Dr. Justine De Young said the reality star could have just commissioned a replica and worn it
  • Scott Fortner said the dress was specially made for Monroe, so she could be the only one to wear it

Kim Kardashian arrived at the Met Gala wearing Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress, but her gesture did not impress everyone.

Experts weighed in on the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star's wardrobe of choice at the 2022 Met Gala. The 41-year-old reality star rocked the dress that Monroe wore when she greeted the late President John. F. Kennedy on his birthday. The dress has been on display in Orlando, Florida, at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum.

Dr. Justine De Young, professor of fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology, disapproved of Kardashian's outfit. The fashion expert told People that it was "irresponsible and unnecessary" for Kardashian to wear the actual outfit because she could have chosen to use a replica.

"She can –– and did –– commission a replica which would be indistinguishable from the original. Such an iconic piece of American history should not be put at risk of damage just for an ego-boost and photo-op," Young explained.

The expert was also not impressed when she learned that the "Kardashians" star lost 16 pounds in three weeks by cutting out sugar and carbs to fit into Monroe's dress.

"Crash-dieting to fit into the original dress is also an unfortunate message to be sending one more in keeping with ideals of the 1960s than today," Young remarked.

Scott Fortner, Monroe historian and collector, shared Young's opinion. He agreed that Kardashian's wardrobe at the annual event was a "cause for concern."

"While I understand the appeal of wanting to wear such an iconic gown, it can't be dismissed or overlooked that anyone other than Marilyn Monroe wearing the famous 'Happy Birthday Mr. President' dress might be cause for concern for several reasons," Fortner told the outlet.

He continued, "The dress was custom-made for Marilyn Monroe. It's not an off-the-rack garment. It was created by Academy Award-winning designer Jean Luis, who had designed costumes for Marilyn's final two films: 'The Misfits' and 'Something's Got to Give.'"

Fortner added that the moment the "Seven Year Itch" actress learned she was to perform at President Kennedy's birthday gala, she immediately contacted Luis to "design a truly historical dress." Monroe reportedly told the designer that she wanted "a dazzling dress that's one of a kind."

"She asked that it be a dress that 'only Marilyn Monroe could wear,'" Fortner remarked.

"Marilyn stood nude as the fabric for the dress was literally sculpted to her body to precisely match every curve. The fabric, which is a flesh-colored soufflé gauze imported from France, was layered strategically so she wouldn't need to wear undergarments," Fortner said while explaining why it "fit her perfectly."

Fortner pointed out that Kardashian has different measurements than Monroe. Thus, it was not a precise fit for her, and "it's logically assumed the fabric and seams were stressed."

Kardashian told Vogue that when she learned about the theme for this year's Met Gala, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion," the most American thing that crossed her mind was the "Niagara" actress.

She admitted that she only had two choices because the dress won't fit — to lose weight or find another wardrobe. She was so determined to wear Monroe's iconic dress, so she wore a sauna suit twice a day and ran on the treadmill. She also ditched all the sugar and carbs from her diet by only eating vegetables and protein.

"I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict," Kardashian said.

After a month, the dress fit her perfectly, making her emotional. Kardashian shared how happy she was to be rocking Monroe's outfit at the gala on Twitter.

"I am so honored to be wearing the iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962 to sing 'Happy Birthday' to President John F. Kennedy. It is a stunning skintight gown adorned with more than 6,000 hand-sewn crystals by Jean Louis," she wrote while sharing snaps of her wearing Monroe's dress.
