  • King Charles is likely keeping an eye on Meghan Markle's every interview, royal expert Duncan Larcombe says
  • Buckingham Palace has to do so in order to protect the royal family brand, he claims
  • Larcombe said the new monarch will not allow Prince Harry's wife to say anything damaging about the royal family

King Charles III is likely keeping a watchful eye on his son Prince Harry and daughter-in-law Meghan Markle's every move to make sure they don't tarnish the reputation of the British monarchy, a royal expert has suggested.

The Duchess of Sussex made headlines once more this week after she graced the cover of Variety as one of the honorees of the 2022 class of Variety's Power of Women for her philanthropic and creative work, including her "Archetypes" podcast.

Markle also gave an in-depth interview about her life in the royal family with Prince Harry, and according to royal expert Duncan Larcombe, Buckingham Palace likely scoured it for anything that could hurt the reputation of the royal family.

"[King] Charles' modus operandi has been to pretty much try and ignore any stuff that's written and said about him. But, on Meghan, I would be very, very surprised if he weren't being made aware of every kind of keynote interview and commercial stuff because they have to," Larcombe, an award-winning British journalist and commentator who spent more than 10 years working as royal editor for The Sun, told Fox News Digital.

He added, "It's the royal family brand. It is a fact Meghan is trading on the brand that King Charles is now very much in charge of. So yes, he will be watching, it will be far more in a business sense. He won't want her to be saying things that could be damaging to the reputations of the royal family and, in particular, things that, in his opinion, are utterly untrue and unfair."

Larcombe explained that the King has a "practical" reason for keeping an eye on the Sussexes' interviews and projects after the couple left the royal family in 2020 and moved to California.

"But it's not because he wants to go and cry and feel sad, and he'll go and dig in the garden to make himself feel better," he told the outlet of King Charles. "It's a practical thing. The business of family has to be protected, and there is only so much the new King will tolerate of Meghan cashing in."

Larcombe, however, noted that Markle appears to be "reining back on what was beginning to look like an attack" on the royal family in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II's death on Sept. 8.

International Business Times could not independently verify Larcombe's claims.

Vanity Fair royal editor Katie Nicholl, author of the new book on the British royal family "The New Royals," recently suggested that King Charles could retaliate if the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes continue to make negative comments about the royal family in interviews.

Nicholl suggested that King could show his "ruthless" side and strip the couple of their royal titles if they tarnish the reputation of the senior royals and the "institution."

"From their past ventures, looking at [their Oprah Winfrey interview], they're not afraid to be critical of the institution," Nicholl said of Prince Harry and Markle on GB News. "But I'm hearing from my sources, and I think this might be at the root of it, that we could be prepared to see the King's ruthless side in all of this."

Nicholl added that King Charles "is not going to stand back and let the family or the institution or the reputation of the crown, which is everything to him, be tarnished or indeed trashed."
