Labor Day, the U.S. holiday that honors the labor movement, takes place this Monday, giving millions of workers throughout the nation a three-day weekend. All non-essential offices will be closed and federal employees will be paid during their day off.

But what's open and what's closed can be tricky. Schools and libraries will be closed, and the New York Public Library will keep its doors shut throughout the three-day weekend. Hospitals will be open, but many locations will have limited staffing.

UPS, USPS and FedEx plan to honor the federal holiday, which means that there won't be any mail service on Monday. FedEx, however, lists on its website that limited services will be offered Tuesday, as well.

The New York Stock Exchange will remain closed to observe the holiday. All majors banks will be closed.

Consumerism, however, remains alive and well on Labor Day, and is often a great time for shopping. Malls will be open Monday, while retailers like Target and Home Depot have big sales. Most bars, restaurants and grocery stores will be open, too. However, pharmacies within stores like CVS will likely be closed or on shorter hours.

Millions often flock to movie theaters, which mostly operate on normal hours. Major League Baseball will have a packed schedule of games, as well.

Labor Day weekend is among the busiest travel times of the year, and Americans should prepare for transportation and road closures.

There will be many street closures in Washington, D.C., this weekend amid a heavy concert schedule. Traveling will be easier in Michigan, as the state's transportation department is removing traffic restrictions on 77 of 110 active road-work projects.

In New York, the MTA provided a list of subway closures in a summer that has been plagued by delays. Some Brooklyn trains won't be in service Monday and many buses will be rerouted amid cultural celebrations.
