  • Despite setting new sales records, writer-director Neil Druckmann said in an interview that no story DLC similar to "The Last of Us: Left Behind" will be coming from "The Last of Us Part II"
  • Naughty Dog, however, is working on a multiplayer mode that will be a standalone title
  • Druckmann was interviewed on Kinda Funny together with Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, the voices of Joel and Ellie from the games, respectively

After setting new sales records for the PlayStation 4 worldwide, some quarters were hoping that “The Last of Us Part II” would get a DLC some time in the near future. It won’t be happening, however.

Writer-director Neil Druckmann himself disproved those story DLC hopes in an interview with voice actors Troy Baker a.k.a. Joel and Ashley Johnson a.k.a. Ellie on the Kinda Funny YouTube channel reports GameSpot. It will be recalled that the original “The Last of Us” had a successful downloadable expansion in the form of the well-received “The Last of Us: Left Behind.”

“The Last of Us: Left Behind” was part of the first game’s Season Pass, but there are no plans for anything similar for the sequel. It was later bundled with “The Last of Us Remastered,” an updated version of the game released for the PlayStation 4 in 2014 and released as a standalone expansion pack for both PS3 and PS4 in 2015.

"No, with ‘The Last of Us,’ I think we had some Season Pass or something that said ahead of time we have some story DLC--no there's no plans for that [with ‘The Last of Us Part II’]," Druckmann said.

Developer Naughty Dog won’t just be sitting on the sidelines as far as milking the franchise though. There is already talk of some kind of multiplayer mode being planned for “The Last of Us Part II.” Naughty Dog has said the game will get a separate online experience down the road through some kind of standalone title.

There is a possibility that, with the PlayStation 5 launch coming in around five months, that the next-generation console could be the ultimate destination of this multiplayer game, GameSpot reports. Still, nothing is confirmed as of now. Since the PS5 will provide backward compatibility, “The Last of Us Part II” will be one of the thousands of PS4 games that will be playable on the PS5.

With more than 4 million copies of “The Last of Us Part II” sold in its first three days, the game has already been outpacing other PlayStation-exclusives like “Uncharted 4,” “God of War,” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man.”
