KEY POINTS

  • The new Lego Colosseum set is the largest ever, taking the crown from the Millenium Falcon collector's edition with 9035 pieces
  • Despite its size, it will actually be cheaper at $550. It releases Nov. 27.
  • This comes along with news that Lego will be having a Black Friday promotion, with buyers receiving free holiday sets with sufficiently large purchases

Just in time for the holiday season, Lego has released a new product to usurp the title of the largest set from the “Ultimate Collector Series Millenium Falcon.” The Colosseum model hails from the Creators line of products, intended for adults and known for portraying vehicles and historical buildings with accuracy.

The colosseum totals 9036 pieces, almost 1500 more than Millenium Falcon, reports Metro. Despite that, the lack of licensing fees means that the Colosseum is in fact cheaper by $250, coming in at $550. It will be available for purchase starting Nov. 27.

As is typical for these sets, there is a range of interesting features. In addition to the meticulous accuracy of the Colosseum set, the building process mirrors the construction of the Colosseum in real life. The floor of the arena lifts up to reveal the structure’s subterranean staging areas.

Designer Rok Zgalin Kobe spoke about the difficulty of effectively communicating the scale of the Colosseum in a Lego set.

“One of the most important things was to convey the Colosseum’s monumentality. I felt that the LEGO model should display a special architectural feature of the original – the rows of columns flanking the arches in different styles,” he said. “To achieve that, the model is constructed using an effect of vertical exaggeration. The cross-section is therefore far steeper than on the real structure. Hopefully, people will be inspired to learn more about the original through the experience of building the LEGO model.”

Apart from the set itself, Lego is launching a promotion over Black Friday weekend. Customers who sign up for their VIP program and place overs over the weekend can receive a number of promotional sets.

Purchases over $150 receive a free tribute model of the story “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Orders over $200 will get a large-scale model of a teal 2x4 Lego brick. Purchases during this period will also receive double reward points. Users must be signed up for an account to receive the goods.

A separate promotion later in the month will net buyers over $120 the weekend of Nov. 29 a free seasonal model of a Christmas tree.
