A man in Long Island, New York, stabbed his father to death Thursday (May 21) while the latter was on a Zoom call with at least 20 people.

Dwight Powers, 72, was busy attending the meeting at his Amityville home when his son, Thomas Scully-Powers, 32, burst into the scene and launched the fatal attack. The onlookers who dialed 911 failed to give the exact location of the crime resulting in a delayed response, New York Daily News reported, citing Suffolk County Police.

“People thought he might have been attacked,” a police spokesperson told the publication. “They noted him fall off the screen and then they heard heavy breathing.”

The incident happened shortly past 12:00 p.m. (EST), CNN reported. The suspect who fled the scene immediately after the incident was apprehended about an hour later and charged with second-degree murder, police said.

He was to be transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for the minor injuries that he sustained from jumping out of a window.

Police said the details about his arraignment and detention will be released only after he is discharged from the hospital. It was also not clear if he was assigned an attorney, according to Associated Press. Police were also working to establish a motive for the stabbing and were hoping to retrieve the knife used for the attack soon by executing a search warrant.

In April, a mentally unsound man killed his father and dismembered his body at the father’s home in Brooklyn, New York. Khaled Ahmad, 26, walked up to the police while they were taking a meal break in a local bagel shop and confessed to the crime. Police rushed to the home to find Imad Ahmad, 57, lying motionless amid a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds all over the body. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with murder.

In May, a man in the Indian capital New Delhi killed his father over a property dispute and chopped his body into at least 25 pieces. Police said the 22-year-old suspect, Aman, had been asking his father to register a property in his name which the father disapproved of. Aman, with his friend, was attempting to dispose of the body parts when police arrested them. Police noted that the father-son duo was alone in the house at the time of the incident.
