A man in India has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 6-year-old neighbor after the girl accidentally broke his mother's dentures.

The 24-year-old suspect, identified as Babugouda Biradar from Bolegaon village in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, was detained Monday after he allegedly drowned the girl to death in a stream, The Times of India reported.

An investigation revealed that Biradar was angry with the victim after the girl accidentally broke his mother's dentures two months ago. When Biradar's mother found it difficult to consume food without her dentures, he started to frequently fight with the victim's family over the issue.

The child's body was recovered from the stream on Aug. 9, Anand Kumar, the police chief, said. Based on a complaint from the victim's parents, the police started an investigation.

After the investigators found out about the suspect's grudge toward the victim and her family, he was taken into custody. During interrogation, Birdar told the police what had happened.

On the day of the incident, Biradar reportedly lured the child with goodies and took her to the stream where her body was recovered later. He then tied the child's hands and legs before assaulting her and dumping her in the water, police said, as reported by Times Now News.

The suspect is currently in judicial custody, police said.
