A 21-year-old man has been arrested after his grandparents were found stabbed to death in their Hawaii home.

The suspect has also been accused of stabbing his 28-year-old brother, who sustained severe injuries in the alleged attack.

Hilo patrol officers responded to an "unknown type disturbance" Monday and arrived at the grandparents' house on Makalika Street in Hilo just before 7 a.m., according to Hawaii News Now.

The two 68-year-old victims, identified as Jeffrey Yoshio Takamine and Carla Kayoko Takamine, were found dead inside the house with multiple stab wounds.

Police identified the suspect as the couple's grandson, 21-year-old Joshua Ho.

Ho was being restrained at the house by family members when responding officers arrived at the residence.

Officers also found another victim, Ho's 28-year-old brother, suffering stab wounds at the scene. The brother was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries to his head but was eventually released.

Ho, who suffered lacerations to his hands, was also taken to the hospital. He was then taken into custody after receiving medical attention.

"Any death investigation, any homicide is an absolutely tragic event, but I think a situation like this where it's involving family members — grandson, grandparents — it just makes it that much more tragic," Capt. Rio Amon-Wilkins of the Hawaii Police Department said, as per KITV4.

The circumstances that led to the stabbing remain unclear.

"Obviously, there's many questions that the family has," Amon-Wilkins added. "As far as the investigation, we're just trying to piece everything together and help get justice for the family."

The case is currently being treated as a first-degree murder investigation.

An autopsy for the deceased couple has been scheduled for Tuesday morning to determine the Takamines' exact cause of death.

The deceased couple was described by their neighbors as nice people who enjoyed living with their extended family members.

The couple ran a family-operated business in Hilo named Big Island Delights, which sold cookies, candies and confections. The store remains closed indefinitely in light of Jeffrey and Carla's deaths.

An unrelated incident was reported last week after a 15-year-old boy was accused of murdering his adoptive parents in their Virginia home. Officials said the teenager allegedly killed them with "a knife and/or a hammer." Details about what exactly led to the alleged murders were not immediately released.
