A man raped a woman in front of her 5-year-old son in order to take revenge on his cheating wife.

Everett Simpson, 41, abducted the duo from a Manchester, New Hampshire, mall in January and sexually assaulted the mother in front of the child in a hotel room in White River Junction, Vermont. The man then let the two escape from the hotel room and he was caught in a Philadelphia suburb 24 hours after the incident.

According to the court documents, Simpson told the woman he found out his wife was cheating on him and hence wanted to hurt her. He also threatened the woman that he knew where she lived and would kill her if she contacted police. Police said the man left a court-ordered substance abuse treatment center, stole a car and kidnapped the mother and her son.

Simpson appeared before the district court in Burlington, Vermont, on Tuesday. His defense attorney David McColgin said he should be freed from jail and be placed in an in-patient drug treatment program.

Attorney Christina Nolan, however, said, “His erratic behavior and refusal to abide by laws and conditions of supervision heavily weigh in favor of detention.”

Judge Conroy too agreed with Nolan and said, “It is clear that continued detention is warranted in this matter,” My Champlain Valley reported.

He is scheduled to appear before the court on Feb. 22.

Simpson’s wife Sherise left him in September 2018 and took her two children along with her. She said Simpson was so furious that she was afraid that he might kill her.

“After texting me repeatedly he called me … and said he was going to kill himself. That’s something he has said before to get my attention and sympathy,” Sherise said. “My sister made me promise I was going to turn my phone off, turn my locator off so he couldn’t find me and not go to him,” the Union Leader reported.

Showing sympathy to the victim, she said, “I hope she will get better and feel better.”

According to the court affidavit, Simpson tried to rape the woman in a car; however, she screamed and got people’s attention. She then convinced him to go to a hotel.

“The woman told police that she kept asking him to bring her to a hotel because she was afraid that if he raped her beside the road he would kill both her and her son and leave them and because at least most motels had cameras,” the affidavit states, the Sun reported.

Responding to this, Sherise said, “She was so smart to get him to go to a hotel with her because there would be cameras there. I never could have imagined in a million years he would have done those things.” Now that Simpson is in prison, she said she can lead a better life.
