A Connecticut man was charged with animal cruelty, Monday, for fatally shooting his neighbor’s pet dog with a pellet gun in November for entering into his property.

Paul Carrier was cutting wood in his Harwinton yard when his neighbor’s pet dog, a German shepherd named Shane, wandered onto his property. Though he meant to scare the dog using a pellet gun, the shot punctured its lung. The dog went into cardiac arrest.

Henry Weingart, the dog’s owner, found Shane collapsed in his garage. It died an hour later. Carrier paid for the family’s vet bills and also got them a new dog, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

The 75-year-old was charged and taken into custody after police found he had a history of shooting dogs. Carrier was, however, released after he promised to appear before a court on Jan.22.

On Nov.25, 2018, police got a call reporting that a man had taken his dog to an emergency veterinary hospital after it was found injured and that the cause of the injury was unknown. Medical examination showed the dog died of a single pellet wound. Police then launched an investigation and arrested Carrier on Monday. The local animal control officer helped them in the investigation.

In a similar incident in December, a California man was arrested after he fatally shot his neighbor's dog for urinating on his yard. The dog’s owner informed police after she noticed her pet was missing from her front yard. During investigation, Modesto Ramos, 23, told police he was furious at the victim's dog for urinating on his yard and vehicle. So he fatally shot it with a rifle and buried it. He was arrested and charged with “animal cruelty causing death, possession of banned assault weapons and negligent discharge of firearm,” Your Central Valley reported.

In another incident in the same month, a Connecticut man fatally shot his own dog at a park out of fear that it would harm some children. The owner told police that his dog, which was not on a leash at the time, attacked and injured another dog. Three children accompanied the injured dog and its owner at the time and he felt his dog might also attack the children. Hence, he pulled out a handgun and shot his pet, killing it, NBC Connecticut reported.
