Residents of a town in the southern Indian state of Karnataka were horrified after they spotted a huge crocodile on the roof of a house. Local media reports said that villagers hurled stones at the 10-foot long reptile in a bid to remove it from atop the house.

An official said the reptile was swept away by the raging waters of a river onto the roof a fully-submerged house amid the ongoing flood in the state.

"The reptile was seen resting on the roof of Ajit Sutara's house after water receded by a foot on Sunday when rain subsided," officer Hallappa Pujari told IANS on Monday.

The crocodile had reportedly taken refuge “for hours” on the rooftop of the house. "The crocodile later slipped into the water and disappeared in an hour as the curious crowd approached it and made noise from all around," Tensildar Pujari, another officer, was quoted as saying.

More than 45 people were killed and more than a dozen remain missing as of Monday in the state of Karnataka. The recent floods in the area affected more than 650,000 people.

"... the flood situation is normalizing. The water has started receding in many flood-affected districts and flood situation has improved," an official update issued by the state government said Tuesday.
