KEY POINTS

  • Prince Harry wants to make peace with his family and "soften" the content of his upcoming memoir, a report claims
  • But Meghan Markle allegedly wants her husband to be "transparent" about "how messed up royal life can be"
  • The Duke of Sussex is reportedly caught between a rock and a hard place

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are allegedly on different pages when it comes to their upcoming projects and his relationship with the royal family, a report has claimed.

The claim comes from Us Weekly's Oct. 31 issue, whose cover, according to a screenshot on Press Reader, reads: "Meghan's Ultimatum to Harry: It's Me or The Monarchy."

Prince Harry has been estranged from the other members of the royal family since he and Markle quit royal duties and moved to California in 2020. However, in the wake of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II's death on Sept. 8, he reportedly wants to make peace with his family, according to screenshots of the Us Weekly article shared on Twitter by user @ChangaDuchessof.

According to the screenshots, an unnamed source told the outlet that Prince Harry, 38, has been "softening" some of the content of his upcoming memoir and the docuseries he and Markle are working on with Netflix and "toning down any negativity" to avoid further upsetting his family — King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

"Harry is well aware his memoir and the documentary will both be heavily scrutinized, so he's treading carefully," the source reportedly told Us Weekly.

However, the Duke of Sussex is reportedly caught between his wife and the royals because Markle doesn't want him to "backtrack too far."

When they stepped back from royal duties two years ago, Prince Harry and Markle reportedly decided that "they wouldn't be silenced" by the palace, the source explained. But if the prince censors his book and their docuseries, his wife "will feel that he's picking his family over her," the report claimed.

"[Meghan] wants him to be transparent about how she was treated and how messed up royal life can be," another unnamed insider told Us Weekly, according to a separate screenshot showing the article's last page. "Meghan moved to America to have a voice, and she feels it's important for Harry to speak up about matters close to his heart, including his family."

But Prince Harry reportedly isn't sure he can take the risk, the first source claimed.

That insider told Us Weekly that the duke wants to pay tribute to his late grandmother and understands that he can't take "nasty swipes" against his father or the royal family as it would "deeply affect his relationship with the monarchy moving forward," according to the screenshot.

The tipster claimed that though Prince Harry is "grateful" for his wife's input and "doesn't want to shy away from his principles or look weak," he also "wants to be on good terms" with his family.

Prince Harry can "either bite his tongue or come out swinging and risk being disinvited from the coronation and other future royal events." However, if his book goes down a nuclear path, "there will be no going back," an unnamed third source told Us Weekly.

But the third insider claimed that Prince Harry also "feels he has the right to speak his truth," which "may be uncomfortable and not easy to read, but it's true and what people want to hear."

"There are certain things that the monarchy isn't going to like — it's honest and open — but it's not scandalous. Netflix wants to air the show in early December. That's why it's getting heated because everyone is racing to get it done," the source added of the upcoming docuseries.

International Business Times could not independently verify the claims. The Sussexes' representatives have not yet publicly addressed the report.

Prince Harry's biographer Angela Levin reacted to the new Us Weekly article, writing: "There are only so many times anyone can threaten like that."

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Markle and Prince Harry's docuseries. The release date of the duke's book was reportedly pushed back to next year.
