  • This intervention posed a problem for the palace as it coincided with Prince Charles' tour, the book said

Meghan Markle stayed silent when tabloids published "unflattering" photos of her mom, Doria Ragland, but the Duchess of Sussex had been upset with how the press portrayed her as a "struggling woman," a new book said.

One of the revelations made by journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in their book, “Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family,” was how the constant hounding of the press affected the Duke and Duchess of Sussex emotionally and mentally. Excerpts from the book released by The Times highlighted one particular incident that drove Markle to tears: the publication of "unflattering" photos of Ragland.

"When a tabloid published a set of unflattering photos showing her on her way to the laundromat, pushing the narrative of a struggling woman in a rough part of LA, Meghan remained silent publicly. But behind the scenes she was in tears," the authors wrote.

Prince Harry, who was worried about losing her, "frantically tried to protect her," the excerpt revealed.

Shortly after this incident, the Duke of Sussex decided to release a statement addressing this issue, but this posed a problem for his father, Prince Charles, who was then on a Middle East diplomatic tour with the Duchess of Cornwall to meet Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa. His efforts to intervene with how the press was treating his girlfriend at the time would impede the plans of the palace and overshadow his father's engagement.

Still, Prince Harry issued a statement via his communications secretary telling the press to stay away. The authors claimed that the Prince of Wales only learned about it 20 minutes before it was released.

Once the news went out, it dominated the news cycle, thereby crushing the efforts of Clarence House for Prince Charles' tour. Despite this, Prince Harry's father, although disappointed, understood the situation.

"Harry had felt the need to prioritize the woman he loved over duty to the greater royal family," the authors wrote.

The new tell-all has been making waves for its bombshell revelations. However, representatives of the Sussexes denied any participation in the production of the controversial book.

Meanwhile, Us Weekly reported earlier this month that Ragland has been staying with the Sussexes in their Los Angeles abode.

“Doria Ragland continues to live with Meghan, Harry and Archie. This has been the most time she has spent with her grandson since he was born,” a source told the outlet.
