A Florida woman was arrested after she threw her 1-month-old baby at the child’s father during an argument. The police said the infant suffered serious injuries after she hit the ground.

According to the arrest report, Shana Vega pulled a knife at the child’s father during the argument, and then tossed the baby at him, media outlet Sun-Sentinel reported. However, the father failed to catch the child, and she landed face down on the floor.

The detectives said the baby’s right eye was swollen, her orbital bone was fractured, her nose was cut, her face was red, her brain was bleeding, and her liver was lacerated, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Authorities said Vega picked up the child and ran away from the hotel where she was living with the father of the baby. Riviera Beach police were informed about the incident, and they searched the area for Vega and her daughter.

The police later found her after receiving a call that a woman was seen sitting on a patio with a baby wrapped in a pinkish blanket.

Vega was arrested on charges including aggravated child abuse and cruelty, child neglect with great bodily harm, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She was being held in the Palm Beach County Jail Wednesday. Her bonds totaled up to $45,000, media outlet Leo Affairs reported.

When the police questioned Vega, she initially denied throwing or dropping the baby. She said she ran off with the child as she thought she would lose custody of the baby to the state’s Department of Children and Families, Leo Affairs reported, citing the arrest report.

She later told investigators she tried to “hand over” the baby to the father, but “accidentally dropped” her.

Earlier this month, a 22-year-old Pennsylvania woman was arrested for allegedly killing her 5-month-old baby. The woman had also stabbed her ex-boyfriend with a knife. Police arrived at the house of the man after they were informed about the stabbing incident. The victim, Cordell Faltz, said his ex-girlfriend broke into his house and attacked him. She allegedly stabbed him in his neck and jaw, and then escaped the scene in his car.
