David Dawson got candid on how he became "comfortable" filming intimate scenes with Harry Styles for the movie "My Policeman."

"Very quickly you have to get rid of any kind of notion of what you knew of the musician before and just deal with him as a fellow actor. And he makes that incredibly easy to do," Dawson said in an exclusive interview with People. "He's incredibly down to earth. He's a good Northern lad like myself."

Dawson said their three-week rehearsal process for the drama allowed him and Styles to "build that friendship and chemistry," along with co-star Emma Corrin. He also praised director Michael Grandage for creating "a space that was full of nothing but support and brought on a wonderful intimacy coordinator, and the four of us explored what we wanted those scenes to be, together."

In "My Policeman," Styles plays police officer Tom, who falls for a local museum curator (Dawson) at a time when homosexual relationships were forbidden in 1950s Britain. Tom later marries a school teacher (Corrin) whose jealousy damages the trio's relationship. Later in the 90s, the trio looks back at what happened and tries to repair their friendship.

Dawson said an intimacy coordinator helped them in filming the sex scenes and they all "explored what we wanted those scenes to be together, so that at all times we all felt a lot of trust and support in the process."

"And me and Harry also promised each other that we'd always look out for each other during it so we both felt always supported and comfortable. And, actually, I can't emphasize the importance of an intimacy coordinator, the impact that brings to the set," the British theater actor added.

On working with an intimacy coordinator, Dawson said, "You might think that it would make people feel restrained in what they do but you actually gain a freedom, I think, because everybody feels very comfortable and respected in what they're making."

At the film's world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, Styles described "My Policeman" as a movie about "wasted time."

"For me, the reason why the story is so devastating is that, ultimately, the whole story is about wasted time, and I think wasted time is the most devastating thing," he said in a press conference ahead of the movie's world premiere.
