National Hot Dog Day is celebrated every year on the third Wednesday in July, a month that is dedicated to hot dogs. This year, July 21 is the day set apart to appreciate one of the most popular summertime snacks among Americans.

Hot dogs were first introduced to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century. It is believed that hot dogs were initially called "dachshund sausages" and got their name because of their long shape resembling dachshund dogs.

In 1870, a German immigrant, Charles Feltman began to sell hot dogs out of a stand on Coney Island in New York City. They soon became popular across the country as they are easy to prepare, inexpensive and easily portable.

The National Hot Dog And Sausage Council estimate that Americans consume 20 billion hot dogs every year, which works out to about 70 hot dogs per person each year.

You can celebrate Hot Dog Day by enjoying a cookout with your friends or exploring your nearby eatery to grab a hotdog with your favorite topping.
