Tuesday is another made-up food holiday, but we're not mad — it's National Ice Cream Sandwich Day. This event has dubious origins but a clear way to celebrate: First, read some facts. Then, obviously, eat an ice cream sandwich.

Here's your history: The ice cream sandwich was probably invented around the turn of the 20th century, according to Delish.

"The ice cream sandwich man, who sells quarter-inch layers of alleged ice cream between tiny slabs of water wafers, did a big business during the hot spell and his field of operation was within the district inhabited by the Nordic enclaves, and his pushcart was elaborately decorated with signs in runic characters," the New York Tribune wrote in 1900. "He made the sandwiches quickly in a tin mold, and was kept so busy that he could not make change, but insisted on receiving the actual price for each ice cream sandwich — 1 cent."

These days, you have options. And whether you're a Chipwich person or a classic chocolate wafer fan, there are ways for you to snag free treats Tuesday and throughout the month of August. Daysoftheyear.com recommends only that you don't eat the sandwich too fast, lest you contract brain freeze.
