National Tortilla Chip Day is celebrated on Feb. 24 annually to indulge in eating the crispy and crunchy snack. Tortilla chips, the stacked snacks of Mexican origin are loved by one and all except it faces some competition from potato chips.

The rivalry is age-old but tortilla has its own share of popularity because of its crunchiness and it comes with a side of lip-smacking salsa or guacamole dip. In fact, in many instances, the salty treat has outsold hotdogs and even potato chips.

Tortillas are the most favored snacks during NFL and major Baseball leagues and in case you are looking to prepare some at home, you will just require some pantry staples.

The basic ingredient of tortilla chips is, however, corn tortillas, which are cut into triangular shape before they are deep-fried. In most cases, tortillas are made with yellow corns but white, blue, or red corns are also used as alternatives.

  • Corn tortillas- You will have to make sure the tortillas are extra thin
  • Vegetable oil- You can alternatively use peanut or canola oil. However, you should better avoid any oil with a lower smoking point such as extra-virgin olive oil because it runs the risk of burning while attempting to deep fry the tortillas
  • Salt- tortilla chips can be seasoned with salt before serving

Procedure:

  • Preheat oil to 340 degrees using a large sauté pan. Line a 13 by 9 inch baking sheet with 2 layers of paper towels.
  • You are now required to cut the tortillas into wedges (in the same manner as you would cut a pizza).
  • Deep-fry the tortillas in batches in the pre-heated oil. Let the chips cook until they curl slightly.
  • Flip them over so that other side fries uniformly. Now, collect the chips with the help of a spider strainer and let the excess oil drain. Repeat this process for all the batches.
  • Set aside the fried tortillas at room temperature for some time before serving.
