A man hiking in the New Hampshire mountains fell to his death Saturday while trying to take pictures at the top with his wife.

Joe "Eggy" Eggleston, 59, and his wife, Kelly Eggleston, 57, attempted to take their pictures at Mt. Willard in Crawford Notch while using rope to get a photo on the very edge of the summit.

Kelly Eggleston heard her husband yell as he was falling off the mountain around 10:30 a.m. local time.

"The hiker's wife heard her husband yell and looked over to notice him falling over the edge of the mountain down a steep cliff that extended to the bottom approximately 800 feet," the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said in a statement.

Kelly Eggleston called 911 and officials with the Mountains Rescue Service responded. They found Joe Eggleston around 2:30 p.m. He was found about 300 feet from where he fell and was reported dead at the scene.

Joe Eggleston reportedly was legally deaf due to contracting meningitis as a child.

It took about four hours for officials to move his body back to the common areas.

Joe Eggleston worked for the Mount Washington Cog Railway and was an engineer on a 1908 coal-powered steam train that passes through one of the largest mountains east of the Mississippi.

He was known to love mountains and working in them.
