A newborn baby and her parents narrowly escaped getting hurt after a glass cover of their gas stove suddenly shattered, shooting out debris into their living room.

The incident took place Tuesday morning at a home in Punggol Central in China. The baby, who was born on New Year's Day, had just been brought home when she had a near-death experience. The baby’s grandmother, identified only as 57-year-old Lee, decided to greet her daughter-in-law with some freshly brewed red date tea.

Lee said her daughter-in-law had just finished her meal and retired to the living room while the tea was brewing on the gas stove.

"Suddenly there was a loud noise from the kitchen, and I thought it was the cabinet that fell," she said, the Independent reported.

Lee immediately rushed to the kitchen to find glass fragments scattered all over the floor. She then noticed the glass covering of the gas stove had cracked and that a corner piece had shot out into the living room.

"Fortunately, my son and his wife had left the dining table near the gas stove at that time, otherwise they would be shot by the broken glass. The broken glass even splashed the food and cabinets aside," Lee told the publication.

Lee said she had to throw out all the food, including the specially brewed red date tea. She said she spent almost three hours cleaning the kitchen to remove any glass fragments from the dishware and the cabinets.

She even hurt herself during the cleaning when she accidentally scraped her leg with a glass piece, following which she visited a clinic to get her treated for the cut.

Lee said it was a shocking incident and that the family is still trying to recover from it. She expressed her worries about what the event would have turned out to if the newborn and her parents were still in the dining room.

She added that the incident had brought a sense of fear in her that had taken over her overwhelming feeling of welcoming her newborn grandchild into the family.
