Breaking drinking glasses when angry is quite common, but glass suddenly shattering is not. In one such not-so-common incident, a 5-year-old child escaped with minor injuries after a glass with hot chocolate malt beverage shattered in front of him while he was stirring it.

Winnie Toh, her husband and two children headed out to a coffee shop in Singapore for a meal Saturday when she decided to buy two cups of Milo, a chocolate malt beverage , for her children, aged 5 and 8. A few minutes later, when the younger son was stirring the drink, the glass suddenly shattered in front of him with a loud sound, Mothership reported.

The boy was drenched with the drink but escaped with just a small cut on his hand. The boy’s father rushed him back home to clean up and change. In the meantime, the table was cleaned and the food near the shattered glass was thrown.

After the boy and his father returned to the coffee shop, they had breakfast. Though the boy suffered minor injuries, he was visibly shaken by the incident.

Though the exact reason behind the glass shattering was not known, Mashable reported that this phenomenon is called Spontaneous Glass Breakage which usually occurs due to thermal stress. In this case, the change in the glass’ temperature from hot to cold resulted in it breaking into pieces.

In an incident in New York in 2018, a glass table shattered suddenly. Erica Glaze told CBS Local that no one was at home when the incident took place. When she checked the CCTV footage, she noticed that the table had shattered spontaneously.

"I roll back the cameras and the table just spontaneously exploded on its own. I’m just wondering what would’ve happened if we were home and he was around the table?" she told the outlet.
