  • A new report says Nintendo will release upgraded models of the Switch soon
  • These new models will allegedly have 7-inch 720p screens with 4K support when paired with TVs
  • The new models are supposedly scheduled for a holiday release

Rumors of an upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch have been floating around the internet for some time, but now, fans may have something to be excited about this coming holiday season.

A new version of the Nintendo Switch is in production, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources. This version will allegedly come with a bigger screen and new hardware to boost the console’s technical capabilities, similar to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X consoles.

Bloomberg’s insiders said that Nintendo will equip these new Switch models with 720p 7-inch OLED screens and 4K UHD graphics capability when paired with TVs. This upgrade hopes to give the Switch better chances against the new PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, which are both significantly stronger in terms of performance and graphical output than the standard Switch console.

Bloomberg added that the mass production of these new models is scheduled to start in July, with a 1 million sales target.

But these rumors may have already been dispelled by Nintendo’s top brass. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in a February financial earnings call that the company will not be announcing a new lineup of Switch models “anytime soon,” Polygon reported.

However, Nintendo America president Doug Bowser told Polygon that the company is always looking for ways to improve its products.

This isn’t the first time Nintendo has denied the existence of upgraded Switch models. Last year’s Switch Pro rumors were shot down shortly before the company released new Switches that had longer battery lives, according to Engadget.

An upgraded 4K-capable version of the Nintendo Switch would be perfect for a 2021 release date because of the upcoming Switch games that are scheduled for release this year. Improved hardware on upgraded models of the console can complement upcoming games such as the 2021 remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” and the new “Monster Hunter Rise,” which releases on March 26.

However, this is still just a rumor. Those who are planning to purchase either a regular Switch or Switch Lite will have to consider whether or not they are willing to wait until the end of the year for the possibility of the fabled Switch Pro’s release.
