Sam Heughan’s fans recognize him most as the lovable Jamie Fraser on “Outlander,” but he is playing a very different role in the action movie “Bloodshot.” Heughan teased that his villainous character has “some issues.”

“Bloodshot” stars Vin Diesel as Ray Garrison, a soldier who should’ve died. However, a mysterious company called RST saves him by making him a super-soldier. Heughan plays Ray’s adversary, another soldier who was used as a guinea pig.

“He’s gone through this horrific trauma. He’s lost his legs, but through RST, he’s been enhanced and he has a second chance,” Heughan explained to ET Canada.

That doesn’t mean Heughan and Vin’s characters are pals. In fact, Heughan’s Jimmy Dalton is an adversary. He didn’t get an outcome quite as impressive as Ray’s, and the Scottish actor notes that there is some resentment.

“He feels angry at a lot of things. He’s obviously upset that this has happened to him,” Heughan explained. “He blames probably a lot of people. He blames the military, he blames Harding for not giving him this opportunity, and blames Ray for taking away everything that he wants, including the technology.”

The Sassenach Spirits founder knows that this is different from his usual role as a dashing hero sweeping women off their feet, but he is hoping his followers enjoy seeing him in a new role.

“Hopefully, fans will see a completely different side to me and to some of the characters I’ve been playing recently,” he told the Daily Record.

Heughan added that “Bloodshot” required a lot of stunt work. He has fight scenes opposite Vin Diesel that he had to train for.

“It was great. I get to fight him a lot, so, hopefully, people enjoy that. I had to work out a lot,” he said. “It’s a very physical role but I really loved it.”

Heughan is known for being active. He founded My Peak Challenge and is set to run in the New York City Marathon.

“Bloodshot” releases in theaters Friday.
