"Overwatch 2" was officially unveiled at BlizzCon 2019, the very first sequel to the popular hero-based shooter video game phenomenon.

Blizzard's hero-led multiplayer adventure is set to feature a host of new updates to the franchise including new heroes, maps, story content and additional ways for players to tackle PvE (player versus environment) missions instead of solely PvP (player versus player) assignments. This is a major update that players have been requesting for some time.

The cinematic began with the newly-assembled "Overwatch" team dropping via air into Paris as they work to fight off a dangerous Null Sector invasion. They've got their work cut out for them as they're forced to face off against a colossal "omnic" robot with a scarily powerful red laser beam that destroys anything in its way. Game hero Zenyatta is an "omnic" as well.

After debuting a heartwarming cinematic teasing of "Overwatch 2," a lengthy gameplay trailer was revealed showing off a few new looks for the heroes as well as their reason for coming together once more.

Several of the "Overwatch" character mainstays are seen in the trailer including Winston, Mei, Tracer, Reinhardt, Genji, Brigitte, Mercy and newcomer Echo. All of the new heroes have new looks which will be revealed soon. This should be a fun way to shake up established outfits and canons for the characters while offering plenty of new skins and unlockables for players to experiment with.

Blizzard Vice President Jeff Kaplan took the stage during the 2019 BlizzCon keynote to discuss additional features that would soon make their way to the new game. There will be a new PvP mode called Push as well as a playable hero called Sojourn as well as a new map based on the Canadian city of Toronto.

Additionally, the game will contain more story-focused quests as well as Hero Missions which focuses on "highly repayable" co-op experiences, Kaplan shared while on stage. In this mode, players can level up their individual favorite heroes as well as customize them to their liking.

Moreover, both players from the original "Overwatch" and those enjoying "Overwatch 2" can play the same maps together and join in for multiplayer matches with each other. This is part of an effort to ensure players with loads of progress not to be forced to simply start over.

Currently, there are no details on the "Overwatch 2" release date but more information is still expected to come out from the ongoing BlizzCon 2019.
