A dog was put down after its owners refused to treat the canine’s broken leg and decaying teeth.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals began investigation in May after receiving reports of a sick dog at a home. When Inspector Kirsty Keogh-Laws arrived at the residence, she found the dog, named Bing, in a terrible condition with a broken leg and infected teeth. The canine was in severe pain and was underweight, with ribs and hips clearly visible.

When questioned, the dog’s owners, said they had taken the animal to a vet. However, investigation revealed the vet had no record of the dog being brought for treatment. The officer decided to take the canine to the vet after the owners showed reluctance.

“The condition poor Bing was in was shocking and he was clearly in terrible pain. His left hind leg was visibly swollen and appeared at least three times the size of his other hind leg. The poor boy couldn’t bear any weight on it. He was also underweight as I was able to clearly see his ribs, hips and spine. It was clear poor Bing needed to see a vet urgently, but the family were very reluctant for that to happen,” Keogh-Laws said.

The vet examined the canine and gave it a pain relief. The vet said the dog had intense pain due to the untreated leg fracture. The dog was also suffering from a chronic, untreatable dental infection. Looking at the dog suffering, the vet decided to put it down.

“He was suffering so much the vet decided that sadly, the kindest option was to put Bing to sleep. This has been a tragic case, which never should have happened. Bing was in his later years of life and should have been treated with love, kindness and been given the care that he desperately needed. He could have been spared this unnecessary suffering if only his owners had taken him to a vet when they realized he was injured,” Keogh-Laws added.

The dog’s owners - Anthony Sellars, John Sellars, and Merrissa Sellars - pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the dog Tuesday and will be sentenced in court next month.
