An Arkansas police officer was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop in Hot Springs late Tuesday.

In an official statement released by the Hot Springs Police Department, Officer 1st Class Brian Scrimshire was conducting a traffic stop in the 100 block of Kenwood Street when shots were fired, said ABC News.

Scrimshire was shot during the incident. He was later taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect was also shot during the altercation, although authorities have yet to release any information about the gunman.

“We ask for prayers for our officer and his family,” said Hot Springs Police Department public information officer Corporal Joey Williams, through the Associated Press.

Bystanders who witnessed the shooting told The Sentinel-Record that they heard “up to nine gunshots.”

Williams on the other hand added that there were two suspects who were involved in the death of Scrimshire, but couldn't confirm whether the shooting was the ill-effect of the traffic stop.

With the scene already in a “contained situation,” Williams assured the residents that the neighborhood is “safe and there is no danger to the public.”
