Prince Charles and Princess Diana fell apart following a tragic accident.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had a fairytale wedding. Unfortunately, their marriage was far from it that they ended up having a divorce.

According to Tina Brown in her 2007 book “The Diana Chronicles,” there was a particular incident that drove the couple apart. Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s close friends knew that their marriage wasn’t okay, but they thought it was workable until an accident happened.

In 1988, the Prince of Wales and Princess Diana went on a skiing holiday in Klosters, Switzerland with a friend Major Hugh Lindsay. Princess Diana opted to stay back at the chalet with Sarah Ferguson, while Prince Charles went out to a skiing expedition with Lindsay. Unfortunately, the latter was killed when an avalanche struck and buried him.

“Diana blamed Charles for his recklessness in choosing such a hazardous run,” Brown wrote.

The couple also fought when Princess Diana insisted that they accompany Lindsay’s body home to his pregnant widow, Sarah. Prince Charles was shocked and guilty, so he retreated to Highgrove. However, Princess Diana didn’t accompany him.

“Diana opted to stay in Kensington Palace consoling Sarah rather than her own husband. His loneliness was palpable,” the royal author added.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana didn’t have a great relationship. In fact, he wasn’t kind to Princess Diana all the time. There were times when Prince Charles undermined the People’s Princess in public and in front of the dignitaries.

There was a time when the future king “deliberately excluded” the Princess of Wales from a conversation with their royal hosts. When one asked Princess Diana for her plans during the official visit, the Duke of Cornwall answered “shopping.”

Former royal butler Paul Burrell also revealed how mean Prince Charles was to Princess Diana. According to him, one time the People’s Princess asked her husband how she looked in her dress that was specially made for him. The future king reportedly gave a cruel response by saying that Princess Diana looked like she belonged to the Mafia. However, Burrell said that while the prince was cruel, there was no physical violence.
