Prince Philip was reportedly heartbroken over Princess Diana’s death on Aug. 31, 1997. The Princess of Wales passed away following a fatal car crash in Paris.

In the Channel 5 documentary “Diana: 7 Days,” Anji Hunter, who worked for Tony Blair, revealed that she heard the furious call that the Duke of Edinburgh made after his former daughter-in-law’s passing.

“I can remember – it sends a tingle up my back. We were all talking about how William and Harry should be involved and suddenly came Prince Philip’s voice… We hadn’t heard from him before, but he was really anguished,” Hunter said.

Prince Philip had a close relationship with Princess Diana while the latter was still married to Prince Charles. In fact, the mom of two confided in her father-in-law regarding the state of her relationship with the future king.

But during their correspondence, Prince Philip indirectly blamed the late royal for her separation from Prince Charles. He encouraged Princess Diana to look deep into her heart and see whether her marriage fell apart because of how she had been treating his eldest son.

“Charles’ relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behavior towards him in your marriage?” he wrote.

Meanwhile, following Princess Diana’s death, Prince Philip performed his final act of kindness for the royal through her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Royal author Katie Nicholl said that it was Prince Philip who convinced Prince William to walk behind his mom’s coffin during her funeral service.

“The 15-year-old was resolute he could not face the walk from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey. He was not strong enough; there were too many people; he feared he would break down and embarrass his grandmother,” she said.

But Prince Philip encouraged Prince William to walk behind the coffin by telling him that not doing so might be a huge regret for him later on in his life. And as such, the two men walked behind the coffin alongside Prince Charles, Prince Harry, and Princess Diana’s brother.
