Prince Philip reportedly has a surprising hobby whenever he’s vacationing with the other members of the royal family.

Several years ago, the Duke of Edinburgh went on a holiday in Scotland with Queen Elizabeth II. During their summer cruise on board the Royal Yacht Britannia, Prince Philip reportedly enjoyed a unique pastime.

Royal author Robert Hardman wrote in his book that the cruise was such a huge success for the royal family that it quickly established the template for the next four decades.

“The royal family adored cruising the west coast of Britain. The main thing was being able to go anywhere on a whim and go ashore with a minimum fuss,” he wrote in “Queen of the World.”

Prince Philip, meanwhile, would relish the prospect of setting up on his barbecue in the unlikeliest spots – and cooking anything that took his fancy. He’d lead ashore with all the barbecue kit and the Queen would come later with the salad supplies and all the side dishes,” Sir Robert Woodard, a former Commander of the Royal Yacht Britannia said.

It has also been revealed that Prince Philip didn’t stick to just beef burgers and pork sausages when cooking. Woodard said that the dad of four was such a brilliant and innovative cook. Prince Philip never shied away from cooking anything that comes from the sea. Woodard said that it wouldn’t be surprising to know that Prince Philip could eat an octopus.

Meanwhile, the Royal Yacht Britannia was such an important part of the Queen and Prince Philip’s lives. Growing up, the cruise ship also became a favorite among their children. Prince Charles grew up riding the yacht and he also tested the patience of some of the crewmen back then.

During one instance, a young Prince Charles kicked his football over to the side and asked his “Sea Daddy” if he could get it back. The request was passed up to Vice Admiral Abel Smith.
