Prince Philip made Prince Charles a “neurotic person” because of his choice of school for his son.

The Duke of Edinburgh attended Gordonstoun and decided to send the Prince of Wales to the same school. According to royal historian Piers Brendon, Prince Philip felt that Prince Charles should be toughened up and be made a man, so he must be sent away to school.

While Prince Philip enjoyed his stay at Gordonstoun, Prince Charles didn’t share his enthusiasm for the “brutal academy.” The boys there were reportedly horrible to the future king.

“If somebody came up to him, they made slurping noises to indicate that they were sucking up to him, so he had no really human contacts in the place,” Brendon said on Channel 5’s “Paxman on the Queen’s Children.”

“It [Charles’ experience] was so unpleasant at Gordonstoun, that I think he lost confidence in himself, and became the sort of twitching, ‘neurotic’ person that we know: always playing with his signet ring and loosening his collar and doing all these sort of nervous, twitchy things,” he added.

On the other hand, Jeremy Paxman pointed out that unlike Prince Charles, his younger brothers Prince Andrew and Prince Edward didn’t struggle as much. In fact, the Duke of York and Earl of Wessex performed well in the said school.

Prince Philip and Queen Mother reportedly had an argument about the Duke of Edinburgh’s decision to send Prince Charles to Gordonstoun because she wanted the Prince of Wales to be sent to Eton. In the end, Prince Philip’s decision prevailed.

On Netflix’s explosive documentary titled "The Royal House of Windsor," it was revealed that Prince Charles hated his stay at Gordonstoun. The documentary exposed that he would escape from school to stay with his grandmother from time to time.

The heir reportedly begged Queen Mother to take him out of school. She refused but told Prince Charles that she would help him find the strength to deal with his troubles.

Prince Philip and Prince Charles had a very difficult relationship. The Duke of Edinburgh confessed that he is a pragmatist while the Duke of Cornwall is a romantic, so they see things differently.
