Princess Anne made headlines this week after she was spotted seemingly refusing to shake hands with President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

In the video, Queen Elizabeth signaled for the princess royal to come over, but Princess Anne refused before laughing hysterically. The Trumps didn’t seem to have taken offense over her action, but the public thought that Princess Anne was trying to make a political statement.

Labour MP David Lammy said that Princess Anne’s “shrug” after being asked to greet the Trumps speaks for the nation. However, body language expert Judi James told Express that this wasn’t necessarily the case.

“This brief encounter did come in the middle of a rather jolly-looking moment where the Trumps were chatting with the Queen while Princess Anne hovered in the doorway behind them, listening and laughing. The Queen appears to have spotted her daughter joining in from a distance and turned to Anne to motion for her to join them but Anne shrugs with her hands out,” she said.

James said that the queuing system at the meet and greets with state officials and the royal family are like choreographed clockwork so it is possible that Princess Anne just wanted to wait for her turn to meet the Trumps. The body language expert said the POTUS took the moment in good-humor, so there’s really no issue with what transpired.

“Although the Queen looks back with a slight mouth clamp suggesting frustration her daughter doesn’t look like a woman chastised, laughing with someone next to her and hopping from foot to foot as though it might be her implying impatience at the time Trump is taking to chat. Overall it looks as though fun and good-humor prevailed though, with Trump looking to be grinning while Charles stood chuckling at this side,” James said.

Following the NATO reception, the FLOTUS even shared photos of herself and POTUS with the Queen and the other members of the royal family. The first lady thanked the royals for being hospitable during their visit.
