Queen Elizabeth reportedly broke protocol for her granddaughter, Princess Beatrice. However, the 93-year-old monarch didn’t give the same privilege to Prince William years ago.

On Christmas Day, Princess Beatrice joined the royal family at the annual walkabout. She was also joined by her fiancé, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

According to Express, royal spouses are not allowed to join the British clan’s engagements until after the wedding. Princess Beatrice and Mozzi have yet to tie the knot, but the latter was already given the opportunity to join his future wife at the church service.

Years ago, the Queen didn’t allow Kate Middleton to join the royal family at the Christmas church service before she married Prince William. But there was one time that Her Majesty invited the Duchess of Cambridge for Christmas even before she tied the knot with the Duke of Cambridge.

In the Channel 5 documentary “Sandringham: The Queen at Christmas,” royal expert Ingrid Seward said that the future Queen was terrified to attend the Christmas festivities of the royal family before she married Prince William.

“It’s very difficult for an outsider – Kate was terrified! It was not that they’re not friendly and sweet; it’s just that there are so many things that can go wrong,” Seward said.

Meanwhile, Mirror claimed that Princess Beatrice breaking royal protocol on Christmas morning had more to do with Meghan Markle than with the Queen.

Two years ago, the Duchess of Sussex was given permission to attend the Christmas church service with Prince Harry before they wed. At that time, the Queen relaxing her rules was attributed to the fact that Markle didn’t have a family in London.

While speaking with Express, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said that only spouses and close family are usually invited.

“ However, Harry and Meghan will be living together at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace and her family are in the United States. The monarchy relies heavily on precedent and tradition but it also makes its own,” he said.
