Once Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage fell apart, the Princess of Wales began her search for true love. Diana believed she found her perfect match after she met Dr. Hasnat Khan but was left devastated once she realized he didn’t share the same sentiments.

Prince William and Kate Middleton, who are currently on a royal tour of Pakistan, recently met with the country’s prime minister, Imran Khan. The public figure, who is Hasnat’s distant cousin, was also good friends with Princess Diana. In a resurfaced confession from 2000, Imran revealed the late royal asked him to convince Hasnat to marry her three months before her death.

In the Channel 5 documentary, “Diana: Her Last Love,” Imran claimed he planned to fly to London to speak with his cousin about his feelings toward Diana. “At least to find out what was the reason [for his reluctance to marry her], because maybe there was some reason that she wasn’t aware of,” he explained.

“Maybe I could speak to him because having married someone from outside my culture, if there was something that could be cleared or some advice that could be given, then maybe I would be able to help.”

At the time of Diana’s death, she was dating Dodi Fayed. Despite the new relationship, Imran and those close to the late Princess of Wales believed she never got over Hasnat. “She had been involved with [Hasnat] for two years, and she wanted to marry him,” the prime minister stated.

“It was clear that she was very deeply in love with Dr. Hasnat, and I just don’t think she could have got over it that quickly.”

Hasnat is believed to have ended the romance due to the overwhelming amount of media attention Diana received, and their cultural differences.

Although Princess Diana hoped Imran could persuade her ex to reconsider their future together, the conversation never took place. In 1997, Diana and Fayed were killed in a car crash in Paris.
