KEY POINTS

  • "PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds 2" could offer something big to gamers once it is ready for release
  • "PUBG" is looking to gain a bigger share of the battle royale market
  • "PUBG 2" improvements could come from similar games that are also making big strides

“PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” has been overshadowed by the rise in popularity of “Fortnite,” but that will not stop the developers behind the video game series from moving forward.

The title is considered to be the game that kicked off the battle royale craze, even if “Fortnite” ended up becoming more popular. This is not to say that “PUBG” did not get its fair share of attention. Work on the game continues, and that includes a spin-off set 300 years into the future reportedly called “The Callisto Protocol.”

However, this is not the only title developers have in store for fans. “PUBG 2” is said to be in the works, but information on how it is going remains scarce. But the good news is that publishers are working on a follow-up and that it will be playable on most gaming platforms, including the PC, consoles and mobile.

Word of a “PUBG 2” came from a report by Korean news site MTN. It was translated by PlayerIGN on Twitter, but details surrounding the status of the sequel were predominantly missing or still unavailable.

Hence, “PUBG” gamers can only wait and speculate about what lies ahead. Expectations for what to expect regarding in-game features and available upgrades are likely to gain ground until something factual comes out for “PUBG 2.”

A debate on this is likely to follow. Right now, a 2.0 update could easily cover improvements to “PUBG.” Hence, the sequel should bring something bigger, picking up from what the current version has to offer.

One way to see what game developers may look into is to study what current competing games have done. Aside from “Fortnite,” there are also “Apex Legends” and “Call of Duty: Warzone” that are likely being monitored. A sequel could help reignite “PUBG” so the people behind it need to be very careful about what enhancements and improvements the sequel would bring.

And while things are looking rosy for “PUBG,” there will be one person who won’t take part in it: the first game's designer, lead director, editor and cinematographer Brendan Greene. He previously stated that he is not interested in a sequel, and it appears that stance remains the same.

Instead, Greene is believed to be working on a new IP at the PUBG Amsterdam studio. There is a lot to consider for “PUBG 2,” and most are hoping that a reliable update about the sequel comes out soon.
