  • The band's lead guitarist, Brian May, said it is a special day for every member of the group
  • The coin features the instruments played by all four members of the band

Queen has been one of the legendary bands of all time. The band has given some of the iconic songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," and "Another One Bites The Dust" which are still considered to be fan-favorites even after more than 20 years of their release. The band has won numerous accolades during its run and just recently added one more feather in its cap.

According to the Independent, the musical group has become the first band to appear on a coin in the United Kingdom. The coin features the instruments played by lead vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bass guitarist John Deacon.

May, who was the lead guitarist of the group, thanked Royal Mint for such a huge honor and noted that when they all started their journey as a band named "Queen," they never thought that a day such as this would ever come in their career.

"This is a big 'Who could have imagined it?' moment for us. When we began as Queen, even the first rung of the ladder to recognition seemed remote and unreachable," May said. He also explained that it is an honor to have the band "recognized" in such a "touching" manner.

The coin features Mercury's piano, May's “red special” guitar, Deacon's precision bass and Taylor's bass drum with the band's crest.

The special coin was made by famous designer Chris Facey who shared that it was an honor to design a coin for a band that he loved so much during his younger days.

The band started their musical journey in 1970 in London. They have made a total of 16 studio albums in their career that spanned over more than four decades. "Queen," "A Night At The Opera," "News Of The World," and "A Kind Of Magic" are some of the albums they produced in their illustrious career.

In 2001, the band was inducted to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while their song "Bohemian Rhapsody" was into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.

A movie on the life of Mercury and the band named "Bohemian Rhapsody" was released in 2018 and went on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

Rami Malek portrayed the character of Mercury in the movie and won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Lead Role for it.
